When a high-tech building opens, a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony seems gone the way of the typewriter.

On September 22, the Innevation Center, Powered by Switch had its grand-opening celebration with a laser-cutting demonstration. It is UNR’s first venture into downtown Reno and part of the city’s vision to become a college town.

Here are nine things you might not know about the new 25,000-square-foot center at 450 Sinclair Street:

1. Football tickets for sale

Not needing one of the eleven 3-D printers in the center’s basement?  No worries. You don’t have to have a high-tech reason to go inside. Tickets to UNR games and performances will be for sale at a kiosk and a Wolf Pack logo shop will allow you to buy Nevada gear downtown.

2. Fancy furniture

Most of the furniture inside was designed by Switch founder and CEO Rob Roy. Roy has been credited with not only unique-looking office pieces but with having the leadership skills and vision that have changed the data industry. He created Switch in Las Vegas in 2000.

3. It has a sister

The Innevation Center in downtown Reno has a sister facility in Las Vegas. While Reno’s location features home-team colors of blue in support of the Wolf Pack, red dominates the décor in Las Vegas.

4. It’s affordable

Individual and business memberships are available and start as low as $10 for a single-day incubator space with coffee, printing and the Internet.  For $1,650 plus the cost of about $1 per square foot you get space, six hours of use of the conference room per month, coffee and the Internet. University alumni, emeriti, students, faculty and staff can use the center free of charge.

5. Cool job titles

The interior of the Innevation Center was designed by Kristi Overgaard, Switch executive vice president of awesomeness.
